Head of Department Message

Operative Dentistry is one of the branches of dentistry that deals with the art and science of diagnosis, prevention, treatment and prognosis of diseases and defects of teeth which require restoration. Operative Dentistry is indicated primarily for dental caries, malformed, discoloured or fractured teeth and replacement and repair of existing restoration. The dynamic specialty of Operative Dentistry consists of several sub-specialties:

  • Conservative dentistry
  • Endodontics
  • Paedodontics
Like other colleges, in LCMD as well, Operative Dentistry is recognized as the foundation of dentistry providing basic dental skills to the learners that would enable them to earn their `bread and butter? when they enter into practical field. The mission of the department is to support academic goals of the institution through teaching, patient care and research. Tutorials, small group teaching, problem based learning are the methods being adopted to enable students to develop critical thinking and analytical skills instead of simple memorization. This transformational change will ensure that the students utilize their skills to apply knowledge in novel situations in order to capacitate them, in the long run, as health professionals evaluating evidence relevant to their clinical practice. My dear students my advice to you all is to learn to develop 3 things; patience, modesty and passion. If you succeed to acquire these then the journey ahead will become fairly easy. Best of luck for your future ahead!

Departments Introduction:
The department was established in 2002 to facilitate teaching of the subject of Operative Dentistry to the students who join the academic course of BDS. The department is located on first floor of the main building of dental hospital. A team of highly motivated clinicians who have achieved postgraduate and under graduate degrees in specialized fields from prominent local and international universities is available to teach and train the dental students. This team is headed by me along with an Associate Professor, five demonstrators and four dental officers. Since the particular stress is on the practical and clinical training of the students in the OPD, therefore, under the supervision of highly qualified and experienced facilitators, the third year and final year BDS students are exposed to a variety of restorative work giving them ample opportunities to learn and apply the skills thus catering the needs of the patients by providing high quality dental treatment comparable to international standards. Though the actual subject of Operative Dentistry is taught and examined for in final year, a subdivision of the subject is Junior Operative dentistry taught during the second year with the practical conducted on phantom heads. The aim of this subject is to improve the practical and clinical skills of the students on techniques before they can enter the OPD and work on patients. The spacious OPD is well equipped with all basic and advanced facilities. Every student and doctor works individually on a separate dental unit creating an atmosphere of a private dental office. Yet it is large enough to accommodate group demonstrations and sit down four- handed dentistry. The department of Radiology affiliated is also with the operative OPD which consists of state of art machinery for intra oral radiography. The evidence of hard work, dedication and professionalism of the staff working here is supported by the fact that the department has been recognized by CPSP for MCPS postgraduate training in Operative Dentistry. During their rotation it is mandatory for the students to submit assignments on various topics. Tutorials, presentations and group discussions are various means by which students are made well oriented to the subject of Operative Dentistry. Various seminars and hands- on workshops are conducted throughout the year to keep the students and teaching faculty abreast with the current trends and dynamic changes occurring in the subject. The students after finishing their four year tenure undergo one year clinical training with the designation of House Officer, during which period they are posted for three months in the department and learn new ways of treating patients with even greater proficiency and sympathy.
